Gatwick is the nearer of the two big London hubs to Margate by road, and a Margate to Gatwick taxi arranged in advance is the least complicated way to get there with suitcases. The drive follows the M2 and then the M25, and the typical time from a Margate address to the terminal is 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes.
This guide walks through the route, how to work out a pickup time for an early departure, which terminal you need, what happens on the forecourt, and how the collection works when you fly home. It applies whether you live in Margate itself, in Cliftonville, Westgate-on-Sea or Birchington-on-Sea, or in one of the CT7 villages.
Every journey is pre-booked, and the fare is fixed for the car before you confirm.
How long a Margate to Gatwick taxi takes
Express Travel Kent publishes a typical time of 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes from Margate to Gatwick. Most cars head out on the A299 Thanet Way or the A28, join the M2 near Faversham, and then take the M25 and the M23 south to the airport.
That range covers normal conditions. Two things can stretch it. Friday afternoons and the first days of school holidays can add 30 to 45 minutes on the M25, and overnight roadworks on the M2 and M25 are common, which matters for the small-hours pickups that early flights need.
Neither of them changes what you pay. With no meter running and the fare set for the car when you confirm, a slow motorway costs you minutes, not money.
Working out a pickup time for an early Gatwick flight
Gatwick asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before their flight. Start there and count backwards: departure time, minus two hours to reach the terminal, minus the drive, minus a cushion for roadworks or a closed slip road.
Take a 6.30am departure. You want to be inside the terminal by 4.30am. Allowing the top of the typical range, 1 hour 55 minutes, puts the latest sensible departure from Margate at about 2.35am, and adding twenty minutes of slack for overnight lane closures brings the pickup to around 2.15am.
Your airline's own check-in and bag-drop deadlines matter too, especially if you are checking in a lot of luggage, so read them before you settle on a time.
- Flight time minus two hours: when you should be at the terminal
- Minus up to 1 hour 55 minutes: the typical drive from Margate
- Minus a margin for night roadworks, or for a Friday or the start of school holidays
- The result is the pickup time to put in your booking
North Terminal or South Terminal?
Gatwick has two terminals, and your airline and flight decide which one you use. It is shown in your airline booking, so check it and give it when you book; the car then heads straight for the right forecourt.
If you do arrive at the wrong one, it is not a crisis. A free inter-terminal shuttle links North and South every few minutes, 24 hours a day, all year, and the ride takes about two minutes.
Being dropped off at the terminal
Both terminals have a forecourt drop-off zone where vehicles pay a charge for a short, time-limited stop. The charge must be paid by midnight the following day, and Blue Badge holders are exempt. Gatwick also offers free drop-off for up to two hours in its Long Stay car parks, with a free shuttle bus to the terminals.
Parking fees and tolls on a journey can be added to a fare where they apply. If you want to know exactly how an airport charge is treated for your trip, ask when you book rather than at the kerb.
Have passports and boarding passes in a pocket before the car pulls in, so the stop is quick and you are inside with time to spare.
Gatwick to Margate: how the arrivals pickup works
For the journey home, your flight is tracked and the collection is timed to the moment it actually lands, at no extra charge. The driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and helps with the luggage to the car.
Gatwick asks private hire drivers to meet their passengers in the Short Stay car parks, so expect a short walk from arrivals to where the car is parked rather than a kerbside pickup.
Free waiting is 45 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one, counted from when the aircraft actually touches down. If you are held up for longer than that, waiting is charged at the standard rate, which you can ask for when you book.
Back in Margate the car takes you to your address. If you are staying in the Old Town, where most lanes have nowhere to stop, or near the Harbour Arm, agree a set-down point in advance; Rendezvous, beside Turner Contemporary, is one option.
Choosing the right car for your luggage
The class of car is about cases as much as people. A saloon takes up to 4 passengers with 2 large cases, and an executive car up to 4 with 2 to 3. An estate also seats 4 but fits 3 to 4 large cases, and an MPV carries up to 6 passengers with 4 or more.
A couple with a case each fits a saloon easily. A family of four with a large case per person needs an estate or an MPV. Child seats are available on request; give the child's age when you book.
What fixes the fare, and what can be added
Enter your Margate, Cliftonville, Westgate or Birchington address in the online booking system and it shows a fixed fare for the car straight away. Once confirmed, it does not change for traffic, roadworks or a diversion, or because you are leaving at 2am, on a Sunday or on a bank holiday.
It can change if the journey does. Waiting beyond the free time, extra stops that were not booked, big route changes asked for on the way, and parking fees or tolls where they apply can all be added.
Cancel more than 24 hours before pickup and there is no charge. Between 6 and 24 hours, up to half the fare may be charged, and inside 6 hours, or once the car has left, the full fare. Online payment takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and Revolut, and the code ExpressTravelKent gives 10% off.
