School and student transfers from Margate, Westgate and Birchington

Margate school transfers are pre-booked journeys for pupils and students: from a home in CT9, CT8 or CT7 to a school, college or university, from school to the airport at the end of term, or from arrivals back to Margate at the start of an exchange visit.

Families tend to book them for the days when the family car is needed elsewhere, the luggage is too much for the train, or a flight lands at an hour nobody wants to drive to Gatwick. This guide covers the 2026–27 term dates, the busiest days to plan around, luggage, what to tell us when booking, and how a pickup at school or at the airport works.

Kent term dates for 2026–27

Kent County Council sets the term dates for its community and voluntary controlled schools. For the 2026–27 school year they are:

Academies, foundation schools and voluntary aided schools may set their own dates, and boarding schools, colleges and universities publish their own calendars, so check with the school before you book.

  • Term 1: 1 September to 23 October 2026
  • Term 2: 2 November to 18 December 2026
  • Term 3: 4 January to 12 February 2027
  • Term 4: 22 February to 25 March 2027
  • Term 5: 12 April to 28 May 2027
  • Term 6: 7 June to 21 July 2027

Planning Margate school transfers around the busy days

The last day of a term and the first weekend of the holidays are when everyone wants to travel at once. The start of school holidays can add 30 to 45 minutes on the M25, so a run to Gatwick or Heathrow on 18 December, 25 March or 21 July needs a more generous pickup time than usual.

Book as soon as the dates and flights are fixed. If plans change, a cancellation more than 24 hours before pickup costs nothing, while closer to the day part or all of the fare may be charged.

Airport runs for students and exchange visitors

Students heading home at the end of term can be collected from home or from their school or college and taken to the airport. For an arrival, such as an exchange student flying in to stay with a family in Westgate-on-Sea, the flight is tracked, the driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, and helps with the luggage to the car.

Free waiting is 45 minutes after an international landing, counted from when the plane actually lands, which allows time for passport control and the baggage hall.

Each airline sets its own rules for young people flying alone, including minimum ages and any escort service, so check those with the airline before you book the car. A transfer covers the journey by road; it is not a supervision service, so if a younger child needs an adult with them inside the airport, arrange that through the airline or the school.

Luggage for a term away

A term's worth of belongings takes more room than a holiday case. An estate seats up to 4 and fits 3 to 4 large cases, which suits a student with a full load or two siblings travelling together. An MPV carries up to 6 passengers with 4 or more large cases, so a group of friends from the same school can share one car and one fare.

Mention anything bulky when you book: a musical instrument, a sports bag, bedding for a university room. For younger children, child seats are available on request; give the age so the right seat comes with the car.

What parents tell us when booking

The more of this you give at the start, the simpler the day is for everyone.

  • The passenger's name and a mobile number they will have with them
  • The pickup address, whether home in CT9, CT8 or CT7 or the school, college or hall of residence
  • The airport, terminal, flight number and time for any airport journey
  • The number of passengers and large cases, and any bulky items
  • The child's age if a child seat is needed
  • Where the car can wait: Northdown Road in Cliftonville, for example, has double yellow lines at any time

How pickups at school and at the airport work

At a home or school address, free waiting is 10 minutes after the agreed time, so a student who is packed and ready at the door keeps things on schedule. Beyond that, waiting is charged at the standard rate.

At the airport, the driver is in the arrivals hall with a name board showing the passenger's name. Because the flight is tracked, the collection is timed to the actual landing, early or late, and there is no extra charge for delays outside their control.

Fares and payment for school transfers

Enter the pickup and drop-off addresses in the online booking system and it shows a fixed fare for the car before you confirm. That fare does not change for traffic or for an early start. Parents can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna or Revolut, and the code ExpressTravelKent gives 10% off. Phone, WhatsApp and email bookings work too.

Common Questions

No. The booking covers the car journey and help with luggage. If your child needs an adult with them at the airport, arrange that through the airline or the school.
